Chelo Gonzalez Amezcua
b. June 13, 1903 d.1975
We never had the pleasure of meeting Chelo face to face, only through her art.
Her nieces tell that she was a happy person who enjoyed life, music, laughter, parties, and bright colors.
Her art shows her interest in ancient civilizations such as the Mayans, Egyptians, and Aztecs. She was obviously a multi talented person with her drawing skills and poetry, which you see reoccurring on her work.
We think that Chelo lived in both worlds, the present and the past. Whether reincarnation was something she believed in; we can not say, but she did draw women with striking resemblances to herself as Egyptian princess, Pagan Queens, etc.
Chelo worked a big portion of her adult years as the popcorn and candy sales lady at the Kress Department Store in Del Rio. Through coincidences, we met a past boss of Chelo’s at the Kress. He tells that the managers of the store were always getting after Chelo for stretching out her hourly wages as to arrange the candy in figures and other pictures.
