Rev JL Hunter
Rev Hunter was the first artist we ever visited. We had been traveling doing antique shows across the country and had started to be aware of contemporary folk artists by way of Talking Heads and REM record albums and videos.
A friend and antique client introduced us to Rev. Hunter in Oak Cliff. We immediately feel in love with him, his work, and his dear wife Ruby. We started regularly visiting Rev Hunter and Ruby each Monday to get our condensed sermon from his Sunday sermon for his church, True Light Baptist Church and see what he had been making.
Rev. Hunter was an amazing in tune man. He was from Taylor TX and ended up in Dallas as a preacher. He started making art from seeing faces and figures in wood and the need to create them.
Rev Hunter changed how we think about limbs on the side of the road and developed how we look at art. He was a true artist creating art from a need to create with the things around him.
Rev. Hunter and Mrs. Hunter were the dearest people we have ever met. We treasure his pieces and their simplistic artistic directness.
