There was never an artist more joyful to visit than Jimmy Lee Sudduth. We used to love to drive to Fayette, Alabama and spend time with him. He told us about his Mother being a herbalist/ root doctor and spending time in the woods as a child as she gathered supplies. He occupied himself playing in the dirt and formed wonderful memories of time and teachings with this Mother.
Jimmy’s wife was bed ridden and starting in the 1960-70’s, he once again used his time to work in dirt. He turned it into mud and created pictures. Each scene he painted with mud using his fingers or a sponge and every picture had a story. His simple materials were magically transformed to paintings of depth and definition.
Jimmy was a wonderful storyteller, incorporating singing and harmonica playing in his tales. Everyone who visited felt welcomed and charmed by his joy.
Jimmy Lee passed in 2007, but left behind the beautiful visuals from his joyful storytelling. We will always remember his smile and laughter.
