We have long loved the labor of Tramp Art.
Using the ready available material of packing crates and cigar boxes, the itinerant carver, hobo, or tramp would chip carve layers to build up a box.
The designs were often fantastical and the uses range from simple decor to boxes, frames, and furniture.
We loved the designs where there is a hidden drawer or surprise function. Tramp art was made using natural wood, stained or painted, depending on the artist’s pattern.
We have collected and sold these beloved boxes, frames, furniture pieces for 40 years and this year we were lucky to purchase a dear friend’s collection to add to our inventory.
We open a full exhibit of our collection by honoring the famous exhibit, FOLK SCULPTURE which opened at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 1976. The exhibits main advisors were Herbert Hemphill & Robert Bishop, founders of the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City.
We present our Texas version of this exhibit at our gallery, WEBB’S FAIR & SQUARE in Fort Davis, Texas.
